Anne Lister Diary & Travel Journal Transcription Project - MS Word Helper Add-in & Template
Diary Tools
A set of helper functions for #AnneListerCodeBreakers taking part in the WYAS (West Yorkshire Archive Service) Anne Lister Diary Trascription Project, or for anyone who is interested in exploring Ann Lister's crypt hand journal code.
Any & all feedback is very welcome - without it I don't know if the tools are working properly or whether they are of any use. So, please, let me know what you think and if you have any ideas, comments or criticisms. And do, please, let me know of any bugs or other issues. On Twitter quoting the #AnneListerCodeBreaker tag and/or my Twitter ID: @ListeriaUK. Or contact me via this form.
Thank you.
There are two versions:
- A Windows-only Add-In, compatible with Word for Windows 2007 or later.
- An MS Word macro-enabled template file, compatible with any version of Word that has a ribbon-style menu: Word 2016 and later on the Mac; Word 2007 or later on Windows.
Functionality - all versions:
- Checks each word that has been expanded from Ann Lister's abbreviations, such as "Ca[me] to my r[oom]", ensuring that the square brackets are properly formed.
- Spell-checks the transcription, including abbreviated words which MS Word is otherwise uable to do.
- Unformats selected text and copies it to the computer's clipboard, for pasting into other documents. This is primarily intened for those who additionally blog their transcriptions.
Windows add-in only:
- Decode & encode crypt hand text. This function uses the same encryption engine as the online encoder/decoder (more information here).
- Unformat and copy HTML-safe text to the clipboard.
(I will add these to the template version if there is demand)
